Descriptions of goods / services & classes
The scope of your rights in a trade mark registration will depend on what goods or services you include in the application. Most countries (including New Zealand and Australia) use a system called the “Nice” classification system to group goods and services into “classes”.
There are 45 different classes (summarised below). When you file an application for registration of a trade mark with an IP office, they generally charge a fee for each class you include. In New Zealand it costs from $70 - $100 + GST per class. In Australia, fees start at AU$250.
